Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Urges Early Flu Vaccination Amid Rising Cases
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is urging residents to get vaccinated against the flu immediately, rather than waiting, as the state is experiencing an early and significant rise in influenza cases and hospitalizations. This early surge defies typical seasonal patterns for the flu, which usually runs from October through May. As of last week, Colorado reported 46 flu-related hospitalizations, a notable increase from 8 at the beginning of September. Emergency department visits for flu-like symptoms are also showing a steep increase, reaching levels that were not seen until early November in the previous year. Last year, Colorado experienced a record-breaking flu season with 5,931 flu-related hospitalizations, including 1,169 children, eight of whom died. Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist and deputy chief medical officer, emphasized the critical window for families to protect themselves before virus transmission surges.
