Severe Storms Cause Widespread Flooding and Road Closures in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is experiencing severe flooding due to heavy rainfall, leading to impassable roads across several communities. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for western and central Massachusetts, with several inches of rain expected throughout the day. Areas such as Lunenburg, Leominster, Fitchburg, South Hadley, and West Springfield have reported significant flooding, affecting the morning commute. In South Hadley, police have warned drivers to avoid flooded streets, while in Lunenburg, Electric Avenue has been closed due to water accumulation. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has also announced closures and lane reductions on Route 2 in Leominster and Fitchburg. The situation is compounded by damaging wind gusts, which have caused additional hazards such as downed trees in Westminster. Meteorologist AJ Mastrangelo has advised drivers to avoid flooded roads, emphasizing the dangers of driving through water.
