LIRR Strike Halts Train Services, MTA Implements Contingency Plans for Commuters
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has ceased operations due to a strike by workers, affecting hundreds of thousands of commuters in New York. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has been unable to reach an agreement with the unions, leading to the shutdown. In response, the MTA has developed contingency plans, including the deployment of 275 shuttle buses to connect Long Island locations with subway stations in Queens. These buses will operate during peak hours, although their capacity is insufficient for the more than 250,000 daily LIRR riders. Additionally, the Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) bus service will assist in transporting commuters. The MTA has also released a list of subway stations for passenger drop-offs, and the AirTrain service to JFK Airport will continue, albeit with expected delays.
