Ho Chi Minh City Approves $5 Billion MSC Container Terminal to Boost Maritime Hub Status
Ho Chi Minh City has approved the development of the Can Gio International transshipment port, a $4.9 billion project led by a consortium including MSC's Terminal Investment Limited, Vietnam Maritime Corporation, and Saigon Port. The port, to be built on Go Con Sho islet, aims to enhance the city's status as a global maritime hub. The project, pending approval for nearly four years, will initially feature four berths capable of handling vessels up to 250,000 tons, with plans to expand to 13 berths by 2047. The port is expected to have a capacity of 4.8 million TEU by 2030, increasing to 16.9 million TEU by 2047. This development is part of a broader strategy to increase Ho Chi Minh City's port capacity, including the expansion of the Cai Mep cluster.
