New York City Expands 2-K Program to Address Childcare Demand
New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul have announced the expansion of the city's 2-K program, offering more than 2,000 children the opportunity to join the inaugural class. This initiative is a response to the overwhelming demand for universal childcare, as evidenced by over 5,700 applications for just over 2,000 available seats. The program aims to provide free, high-quality early childhood education, saving families an average of $26,000 annually. The majority of the seats will be full-day and full-year, with 82% of families receiving one of their top three choices. The initiative is part of a broader effort to make universal childcare a reality in New York City, with plans to expand the program further in the coming years.
