Ancient Ape Fossil Discovery in Egypt Challenges Human Origins Theory
An international team of researchers has discovered a previously unknown fossil ape species, Masripithecus moghraensis, in Wadi Moghra, northern Egypt. This species, dating back 17 to 18 million years to the Early Miocene, provides the first definitive evidence of an ape from North Africa. The discovery, published in Science, suggests that Egypt and the wider Middle East played a significant role in the evolutionary developments leading to modern apes. The fossil, which includes a lower jaw with unique dental traits, indicates that apes were present in North Africa earlier than previously thought, challenging existing theories about the geographic origins of apes.
