Wildfires in Oregon and Washington Burn Over 3 Million Acres, Trigger Evacuations
Wildfires across Oregon and Washington have scorched more than three million acres, prompting evacuations, highway closures, and air quality advisories. The Grasshopper Fire in Wasco County has destroyed six homes and 15 outbuildings, growing to over 83,600 acres with 20% containment as of August 12, 2026. The Paradise Fire, spanning 3,946 acres, remains uncontained, while the Hagen Fire has burned 53,306 acres with 11% containment. A Red Flag Weather Warning is in effect for Thursday, with potential lightning posing additional risks. Crews are actively working to contain fires, including defensive operations and the use of unmanned aircraft systems to detect heat signatures. Governor Tina Kotek has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on August 14 to honor Jason Ensign, a firefighter who tragically lost his life battling the Wrights Spring Fire in Klamath County.
