Ancient Sheeppox Virus DNA Discovered in Medieval Manuscripts and Bronze Age Remains, Revealing 3,700-Year History
Recent research has uncovered the ancient presence of the sheeppox virus (SPPV) in livestock, with evidence dating back over 3,700 years. This discovery was made possible through the analysis of ancient DNA found in medieval manuscripts, specifically from the animal skins used to create parchment, and even older samples from Bronze Age sheep teeth. An international team of geneticists, historians, virologists, protein chemists, and conservators, led by University College Dublin (UCD), identified genetic traces of SPPV in historical documents like the 1000-year-old York Gospels and the Corpus Glossary. The study also utilized dental remains from ancient pastoralist settlements in the Eurasian steppe, which can preserve genetic evidence of infection for millennia.
