The Children's Hunger Project Expands Operations Amid Rising Demand in Brevard Public Schools
The Children’s Hunger Project (TCHP) has expanded its operations by utilizing an additional 3,000 square feet at the Shah Center to End Childhood Hunger in Cocoa, bringing their total facility size to 9,000 square feet. This expansion was necessitated by a significant increase in demand for their services, which provide nutrition-packed meals to students in over 60 local elementary schools for the weekends. Executive Director Cheryl Cominsky attributes this surge to the lack of affordable housing, which places immense financial pressure on low-income families, often leaving them unable to afford adequate food after covering rent and utilities. TCHP currently distributes over 5,000 meals every Friday, with recipients discreetly selected by teachers and administrators who are aware of the families' struggles. The organization's growth has been supported by donations, including an air conditioning unit from MH Williams for the new storage and packing space.
