Mahmoud Khalil Seeks Recusal of Ex-Justice Dept. Official from Appeals Panel
Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student, is challenging the involvement of Judge Emil Bove in his deportation appeal. Khalil's lawyers argue that Bove's previous role in immigration enforcement presents a conflict of interest. Bove, who served as a top Justice Department official, was involved in investigations against student protesters, including those at Columbia. Khalil, who is fighting deportation over his pro-Palestinian activism, contends that Bove's past actions could bias the appeal process. The Justice Department, representing the government, sees no basis for recusal but defers to Bove's decision.
