Ukrainian Drones Attack Russian Cargo Vessel, Escalating Maritime Tensions
A Russian cargo ship carrying wheat was attacked by Ukrainian drones in the Sea of Azov, resulting in the vessel sinking. The attack, which occurred on April 5, 2026, left one crew member dead and two others missing. The incident was reported by Vladimir Saldo, the Moscow-installed leader of the Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine's Kherson region. The crew managed to abandon the ship and reach the shore near the village of Strilkove in the Kherson region. The attack is part of ongoing hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, with Ukraine leveraging its experience in countering drones acquired during its four-year conflict with Russia. The attack on the Volgo-Balt vessel is not the first instance of Ukraine targeting merchant ships in neutral waters, according to Saldo.
