FAA Issues Ground Stops at NYC Airports Amid Severe Weather, Causing Major Flight Disruptions
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops at LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International, and Newark Liberty International airports due to severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and thunderstorms. This led to significant flight cancellations and delays across the New York City area. As of Tuesday morning, over 900 flights were canceled, with LaGuardia experiencing 456 cancellations, JFK 338, and Newark 255. The ground stops were initially lifted by mid-morning but were reissued at Newark in the afternoon due to ongoing thunderstorms. The FAA reported that Newark was operating with an average ground delay of 230 minutes, while JFK and LaGuardia faced departure delays averaging 120 minutes. The disruptions coincided with a Flood Watch in effect for all five boroughs through Wednesday evening.
