Trump Administration Supports Sable Offshore Amid California Regulatory Dispute
The Trump administration is actively supporting Sable Offshore Corp. in its legal battle against California regulators over the operation of an oil pipeline crossing Gaviota State Park. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy are visiting Santa Barbara to strategize on overcoming regulatory challenges. This comes after federal Judge Stephen Wilson ruled against California State Parks' request for a temporary restraining order to halt oil pumping through a section of the pipeline. The dispute centers on the expiration of an easement and the safety of the pipeline, with California's State Fire Marshal traditionally holding authority over such decisions. However, the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) now claims jurisdiction, reversing its previous stance. Governor Gavin Newsom is opposing the pipeline's operation, citing environmental concerns and state authority.
