Laken Riley Act Signed into Law, Mandating Detention for Undocumented Immigrants Accused of Certain Crimes
The Laken Riley Act, signed into law by President Trump in January 2025, mandates federal immigration authorities to detain undocumented immigrants accused of specific crimes, including theft. This legislation also grants states the authority to sue the federal government for harm caused to citizens by individuals residing in the country illegally. The bill is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was tragically killed in Georgia in 2024 by an undocumented Venezuelan man. The act received bipartisan support, with 12 Senate Democrats and 48 House Democrats voting in favor of its passage. Notably, Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) was among those who voted for the legislation, despite his opponent, Representative Mike Collins (R-GA), later accusing him of not supporting the act.
