Utah Medical Board Demands Suspension of AI Doctor Program Over Safety Concerns
The Utah Medical Licensing Board has called for the immediate suspension of a state-run artificial intelligence (AI) doctor program, citing safety concerns. The program, initiated by Utah’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy in collaboration with AI startup Doctronic, was designed to allow a chatbot to conduct clinical evaluations and autonomously renew prescriptions for nearly 200 drugs. The Medical Board expressed its concerns in a letter, stating that the program was launched without their consultation, potentially putting Utah citizens at risk. The board emphasized the need for further discussion before the program proceeds, highlighting the importance of oversight in medical practices involving AI technology.
