Suffolk County Faces Potential Disaster Declaration Over Oyster Crisis
Suffolk County, located on Long Island, is facing a severe crisis in its oyster industry due to prolonged freezing temperatures and icy waters. These harsh conditions have led to significant damage to equipment and a halt in operations, resulting in the loss of approximately 30% of the county's oyster crop. This equates to millions of oysters lost, causing financial distress for local oyster farmers. Peter Stein, founder of Peeko Oysters, reported losing over a million oysters, with financial losses reaching high six figures to low seven figures. The situation has prompted New York Governor Kathy Hochul to request a Secretarial Disaster Designation from the US Department of Agriculture, which would enable affected farmers to access low-interest emergency federal loans to cover their losses.
