Researchers Investigate GLP-1 Drugs for Potential Anti-Aging Effects
Scientists are exploring whether GLP-1 medications, commonly used for weight loss and diabetes, could also slow the aging process. Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, are conducting one of the first clinical trials to examine if tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound, impacts aging. This trial will follow adults aged 55 to 70 who qualify for weight loss treatment, studying their biological age markers, inflammation levels, cognitive function, strength, and mobility. Separately, researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and Case Western Reserve University are analyzing blood from 84 adult participants with HIV and abnormal body fat buildup. Early findings from a previous study showed that after 32 weeks, participants taking semaglutide, found in Ozempic and Wegovy, exhibited changes consistent with slower aging based on DNA-based 'aging clocks.' Dr. Michael Corley, an associate professor of medicine at UCSD, noted that this initial signal warran...
