Research Unveils How Abnormal Fat Loss Can Lead to Diabetes
Recent research has highlighted the critical role of adipose tissue in metabolic health, revealing that abnormal fat loss can lead to diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The study, led by Elif Oral, M.D., and Ormond MacDougald, Ph.D., focused on familial partial lipodystrophy type 2 (FPLD2), a condition characterized by uneven fat distribution and loss. The researchers developed a mouse model to study the effects of switching off the lamin A/C gene in adipocytes, which is mutated in FPLD2 patients. They discovered that this genetic alteration leads to significant changes in gene activity, preventing fat cells from processing and storing lipids properly. Additionally, the adipocytes and immune cells within the fat tissue shifted to a pro-inflammatory state, and mitochondrial function was impaired, contributing to the deterioration of fat tissue.
