Lewiston-Auburn Implements New Automated Trash and Recycling Collection Rules
Lewiston and Auburn, Maine, are enforcing new automated trash and recycling collection rules under the Cart2Curb program, managed by Casella. This system requires residents to use city-provided carts for trash and recycling, ensuring lids are securely shut and carts are placed correctly for collection by specialized split-body trucks. These trucks have separate compartments to prevent mixing of trash and recyclables. While Lewiston is currently in an assessment phase, providing 'Oops' notices for educational purposes, full enforcement, including potential fines for non-compliance, will begin on October 1. Auburn residents are already subject to these rules, which aim to standardize collection, improve efficiency, and reduce environmental impact. The new system addresses previous inconsistencies where trash was often collected outside suitable bins or from ineligible properties.
