Amtrak Breaks Ground on New Maintenance Facility in New York City to Support Airo Trainsets
Amtrak has commenced major construction on a new maintenance facility at Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City, New York. This project is designed to support the introduction of Amtrak’s new Airo trainsets, which are slated to replace passenger cars that have been in service for over 50 years. The new facility, which will open in phases through 2030, will be utilized for daily inspections, servicing, and cleaning of trains. The work includes the construction of a new two-track maintenance and inspection facility, six new service and cleaning tracks, and the consolidation of various operational components into a single location. Additionally, 11 existing service platforms will be brought to a state of good repair, and other infrastructure upgrades, such as the reconfiguration of two major interlockings and tracks, will be implemented to accommodate the new operations. This comprehensive investment, exceeding $1 billion, is primarily funded by Congress through FRA-administered grants.
