Former Hawaii Governor George Ariyoshi, First Asian American Governor in U.S., Dies at 100
George R. Ariyoshi, the first Asian American governor in the United States, has passed away at the age of 100. Ariyoshi, a Democrat, served as the governor of Hawaii from 1973 to 1986. He initially became acting governor in 1973 when Governor John Burns fell ill, and subsequently won the governorship in 1974, serving three terms. His tenure coincided with the Democratic Party's rise to power in Hawaii, a shift that began in 1954. Ariyoshi's political career began in the Territorial House of Representatives in 1954, and he later served in the Territorial and State Senate before becoming lieutenant governor. Born to Japanese immigrant parents in Honolulu, Ariyoshi overcame personal challenges, including a speech impediment, to pursue a career in law and politics. His leadership was marked by Hawaii's transformation into a major tourist destination and a period of significant population growth.
