New York City Bar Association Raises Concerns Over Costa Rica's Judicial Budget Cuts
The New York City Bar Association has expressed concern over significant budget cuts imposed by Costa Rica's Executive Branch on the Judiciary. These cuts, amounting to approximately $59 million, have sparked institutional tension between government branches and are seen as a threat to judicial independence. The Costa Rican Association of the Judiciary warns that these financial constraints could compromise citizens' rights to timely and impartial justice, affecting criminal investigations, victim assistance, and court operations. Additionally, the failure to appoint alternate justices to the Constitutional Chamber has left it unable to reach the necessary quorum for decision-making, further exacerbating the crisis.
