Wharton Street Redevelopment Project Opens, Enhancing Downtown Summerland
The Wharton Street Redevelopment Project in downtown Summerland was officially opened on April 25, 2026, at Veterans Memorial Square. The project, which cost $8.557 million, included significant infrastructure work and the creation of Veterans Memorial Square on Henry Avenue. The cenotaph was relocated within Memorial Park as part of the project. Mayor Doug Holmes highlighted the project's importance in connecting Main Street and Memorial Park, enhancing the area's aesthetic and supporting economic growth. The project aims to improve community well-being, encourage walkability, and boost tourism and cultural activities. Brianna Ure of FortisBC expressed pride in supporting the project, while Pat O'Sullivan, president of the Summerland branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, noted the updated cenotaph's new prominence.
