President Trump Approves Saudi Nuclear Deal, Raising Proliferation Concerns
President Trump has approved a significant nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia, which could allow the kingdom to enrich uranium on its own soil. This agreement, reported by The Wall Street Journal, is designed to give the U.S. influence over Saudi Arabia's nuclear program and prevent the misuse of nuclear material for military purposes. The deal is expected to last 30 years and is valued at tens of billions of dollars, with American companies playing a central role in developing Saudi Arabia's nuclear infrastructure. However, the agreement does not require Saudi Arabia to adopt the International Atomic Energy Agency's Additional Protocol, which would allow for more stringent inspections and monitoring. The agreement is set to be submitted to Congress for review, where it may face opposition due to concerns about nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.
