Sudbury Community Mourns 8-Year-Old Mason Sundberg After Fatal Tree Incident at Camp Chickami
The community of Sudbury, Massachusetts, is in mourning following the death of 8-year-old Mason Sundberg, who was fatally struck by a falling tree branch at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland. The incident occurred when a large tree fell, knocking down another tree, and a branch hit Mason. He was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Mason's family released a statement describing him as a 'fiercely loyal, loving and empathetic friend,' who loved video games, sushi, swimming, skiing, and drawing. A camp staffer also sustained injuries but has since been released from the hospital. In response to the tragedy, Jack Fucci, president and CEO of the West Suburban YMCA, announced that Camp Chickami would be closed for the remainder of the season, which was originally scheduled to end on September 4. Grief counseling and support services are being made available for campers, their families, and staff.
