Michigan Health Department Reports First Cyclosporiasis Deaths Amid Rising Cases
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has reported the first two deaths linked to the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak in the state. As of August 3, 2026, the number of cases has risen to 11,234, marking an increase of 461 since the last update. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal disease caused by a microscopic parasite, often resulting in symptoms like watery diarrhea and fatigue. The two deceased individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been exacerbated by the infection and dehydration. The outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce from specific distributors, although no official cause has been confirmed. Michigan remains the hardest-hit state in this multi-state outbreak, with the highest number of cases reported.
