Georgia State University Researchers Develop Oral Drug to Block Measles-like Virus in Ferrets
Researchers at Georgia State University's Center for Translational Antiviral Research have developed an oral antiviral drug candidate, GHP-88310, that effectively blocks the transmission of a measles-like virus in ferrets. The study, published in Nature Microbiology, demonstrates that the drug can prevent virus transmission through both direct contact and airborne exposure. The drug, a broad-spectrum inhibitor of the viral polymerase, was administered prophylactically and therapeutically, showing a reduction in clinical symptoms and transmission duration. This development is significant as measles has reemerged in the U.S. since 2025, with thousands of cases reported. The study's findings suggest that GHP-88310 could augment traditional vaccination methods, potentially aiding in outbreak management.
