Perdue Farms Engages Ohio County Students in Agricultural Education Program
Perdue Farms, a fourth-generation, family-owned food and agricultural business, is actively involved in the Ohio County Youth Ag Days program. This initiative, celebrating its 30th year, connects fourth-grade students to local agriculture and food production. Perdue Farms operates a processing plant in Ohio County and contributes to the program by helping students understand the poultry industry, including the process of raising chickens and providing food. Tracy McKinney, live production area coordinator with Perdue, noted that many students recognize the Perdue name due to the company's local presence and employment of their relatives. The program aims to bridge the disconnect many children have with agriculture, showing them where their food comes from and the various career opportunities within the sector beyond traditional farming. The event, held at Luttrell Farms, involves students rotating through stations covering various agricultural topics, including poultry, livestock, and crop production.
