Therapists Urged to Screen Patients for AI Chatbot Use Amid Mental Health Concerns
A new paper has been released urging therapists to routinely screen patients for their use of AI chatbots, particularly in the context of mental health support. The paper highlights the rapid and largely untested use of generative AI technologies for addressing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and relationship stress. Experts, supported by the World Health Organization, convened at a workshop at TU Delft to discuss the implications of AI chatbots in mental health care. They expressed concerns about the potential risks to well-being, especially among young people, and called for stronger governance and oversight in the use of these technologies.
