Vanderbilt University Sued for Alleged Discrimination Over Denied Gender-Affirming Care Coverage
A transgender faculty member at Vanderbilt University, Hannah Housden, has filed a lawsuit against the institution, alleging discrimination after her insurance claim for gender-affirming facial feminization procedures was denied. The lawsuit, filed in federal court on September 1, states that Housden's physician submitted the claim in 2024 through Vanderbilt's employee health plan. Initially, insurance provider Aetna denied coverage, deeming the procedure not 'medically necessary.' Vanderbilt subsequently upheld this denial, also classifying the surgery as cosmetic, despite the World Professional Association for Transgender Health considering such procedures medically necessary. The legal complaint highlights that Vanderbilt's employee health insurance plan excludes certain facial procedures for gender dysphoria treatment, even though it does not exclude all types of facial work.
