The summer of 2026 was officially the hottest on record across the contiguous United States, according to NOAA. Meteorological summer, spanning June through August, saw an average temperature of 74.4°F (23.6°C), surpassing previous records set in 1936 and 2021. August 2026 also marked the hottest August since record-keeping began in 1895, with an average temperature of 75.6°F (24.2°C). Nashville, Tennessee, experienced extreme heat, breaking four daily high-temperature records between July and September, including a peak of 101°F (38.3°C) on July 3. The city endured an extended heat streak, with temperatures above normal for 25 consecutive days starting August 27. A cooler pattern is expected to bring relief as fall begins.
