Researchers Explore Immunotherapy Targeting Microglia for Alzheimer's Treatment
Researchers are investigating the potential of immunotherapy targeting the brain's immune cells, specifically microglia, as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. The focus is on the TREM2 receptor, which is crucial for the protective abilities of microglia against beta-amyloid plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer's. A drug called AL002, developed by Alector, was designed to activate the TREM2 receptor. However, in a Phase 2 trial, AL002 failed to slow cognitive decline and caused high rates of brain swelling and microhemorrhages. Despite this setback, experts believe that targeting TREM2 remains a promising strategy for Alzheimer's treatment.
