Finnish Study Challenges Conventional Wisdom on Screen Time and Cognitive Development in Children
A recent study conducted by Finnish researchers, part of the long-running PANIC study, has found that children who accumulated more screen time from childhood into their teenage years performed better on cognitive tests. This finding contradicts the common assumption that increased screen time negatively impacts cognitive processing, attention, and working memory in children. The study tracked 260 children, aged six to eight at the start, over eight years, using wearable devices to monitor movement and sitting, and questionnaires. As teenagers, these participants underwent computerized tests for learning, attention, and working memory. The initial hypothesis was that more screen time would correlate with weaker cognitive abilities, aligning with previous research linking sedentary lifestyles to poorer school performance.
