Dhillon stated that the right to bear arms is not a luxury and that a fee several times higher than the cost of the firearm itself is illogical and an unconstitutional impediment. The lawsuit highlights that San Jose's fee is the highest in the nation, significantly surpassing those charged by other major U.S. cities like New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Chicago. The Civil Rights Division's Second Amendment Section is responsible for enforcing the Second Amendment and encourages individuals who believe their rights have been infringed upon to submit a complaint.

New Hampshire Chief Justice Gordon MacDonald has resigned, effective immediately, after admitting to violating three sections of the state’s Code of Judicial Conduct. The resignation follows an inquiry by the state’s Judicial Conduct Committee (JCC) into a personnel move involving Dianne Martin, MacDonald’s former chief of staff. Martin was laid off on April 1, 2025, and rehired on April 4, allowing her to cash out nearly $50,000 in unused vacation, sick time, and other accrued benefits. The JCC found that MacDonald failed to promote public confidence in the judiciary, perform his job competently, and avoid favoritism regarding Martin's removal. Additionally, MacDonald reportedly bypassed the judicial branch’s standard merit-based hiring process to secure Martin's new position. MacDonald chose to resign rather than face a public trial, stating it was to maintain the integrity of the judicial branch and avoid a disruptive public hearing. He also agreed to pay the legal fees of the committee’s counsel.

IRS Faces Lawsuit Over Taxpayer Information Sharing with ICE for Deportation Purposes

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is being sued by the Center for Taxpayer Rights and other plaintiffs over its policy of sharing taxpayer addresses with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for civil deportation proceedings against noncitizens. The lawsuit alleges that this practice violates the Privacy Act, the Internal Revenue Code (IRC), and the Administrative Procedure Act. Specifically, the plaintiffs argue that IRC §6103 generally prohibits the IRS from disclosing information from tax returns to other agencies, except under certain circumstances. While the IRS has a Memorandum of Understanding with ICE allowing data-sharing for criminal investigations or enforcement, the lawsuit contends that sharing addresses for civil deportations falls outside these permissible exceptions. A U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia initially ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, but the case is now on appeal with the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
