Low-Dose THC Shows Promise in Stabilizing Breast Cancer Cells, Preventing Aggressive Reversion in Tumor Models
Researchers have discovered that low doses of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a compound found in cannabis, can prevent aggressive breast cancer cells from reverting to a more stem-like, treatment-resistant state. The study, published in Communications Biology, involved treating 3D tumor models (organoids) derived from mouse breast tumors and patient samples with low-dose THC for four days. After the treatment, the organoids did not return to an aggressive state. Instead, they remained in a mature, luminal-like state, similar to the cells lining the breast's milk ducts, and exhibited a reduced capacity to self-renew or form new tumors. This effect was sustained even when the treated organoids were exposed to environmental stressors that typically induce aggressive behavior in cancer cells.
