CIA's Skyhook Program: A Cold War Innovation for Aerial Retrieval
In the 1960s, the CIA developed an innovative aerial retrieval system known as Skyhook, which allowed for the extraction of personnel and materials from the ground without the need for an aircraft to land. This technology was notably used during Project Coldfeet in 1962, where the CIA successfully retrieved two operatives and 150 pounds of Soviet research materials from an abandoned Soviet drift station in the Arctic. The Skyhook system, invented by Robert Fulton, utilized a balloon-lifted cable to pluck individuals from the ground into a passing aircraft. This method was crucial during the Cold War, providing the U.S. with valuable intelligence on Soviet operations and technology.
