Teen Angler Breaks South Dakota State Record with One-Pound Pumpkinseed Catch
Jack Backman, a teenager from Harrisburg, South Dakota, set a new state record by catching a one-pound pumpkinseed fish at Wall Lake. Initially mistaking the fish for a crappie, Backman realized its significance upon closer inspection. The catch was officially weighed and confirmed to surpass the previous state record of 12 ounces, which had stood since 1970. The record-breaking fish was caught using a quarter-ounce black Northland tungsten jig with a nightcrawler, a common setup for freshwater fishing. The catch has been officially recognized by the state, making Backman the new record holder.
