Aaron Sverdlov Highlights Broader Cardiovascular Risks in Cancer Patients on ICIs
Aaron Sverdlov, a Professor and Director of Heart Failure at the University of Newcastle, has emphasized the need for comprehensive cardiovascular care for cancer patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). In a recent publication in the Supportive Care in Cancer journal, Sverdlov and his team analyzed data from a cohort of 1,080 Australian patients treated with ICIs. The study found that nearly one-third of these patients experienced at least one cardiovascular hospital admission, with ischemic heart disease, venous thromboembolism, and atrial fibrillation/flutter being the most common causes. Myocarditis, often the primary focus of cardiovascular surveillance in these patients, accounted for only a small fraction of admissions. The study also identified pre-existing conditions such as ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and arrhythmia as strong predictors of subsequent cardiovascular hospitalizations.
