UsAgainstAlzheimer's has released new research, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, highlighting that priorities for Alzheimer's treatment benefits differ significantly between people living with the disease and their care partners, and also vary based on the stage of the disease. The study, part of the organization's Alzheimer’s Disease Patient and Caregiver Engagement (AD PACE) initiative, involved qualitative interviews with 64 individuals and a quantitative survey of 640 participants. Researchers identified 50 important concepts across six domains: General Independence, Thought Processing, Communication, Daily Activities, Emotions, and Social Life and Activities. A large-scale study conducted by the University of East Anglia and the University of Exeter indicates that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may reduce the risk of dementia, particularly for certain groups of postmenopausal women. The research, which tracked over 180,000 postmenopausal women in the UK, found that HRT users had a 16% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease compared to non-users. The most significant reduction, 26%, was observed in women who had undergone surgical menopause. Additionally, women with naturally lower lifetime estrogen exposure (due to late onset of periods or early menopause) showed a 16% lower risk of any type of dementia with HRT use. The study also highlighted that women carrying the APOE4 gene variant, a known risk factor for Alzheimer's, experienced stronger benefits from HRT. The optimal age for initiating HRT for dementia risk reduction was identified as between 46 and 56, supporting the 'critical window' hypothesis.

The study, published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, included 183,450 postmenopausal women and found a 10% reduction in the risk of all-cause dementia among HRT users. This reduction was stronger in women who experienced surgical menopause (26% lower risk) and those with less than 37 years of endogenous estrogen exposure (16% lower risk). The timing of HRT initiation also played a significant role, with the risk of dementia reduced when HRT was started between the ages of 46 and 56 years. For women with natural menopause, the risk was reduced by 18% only when HRT was started at 51-56 years.
