Colombian Government Urges Glencore to Discuss Cerrejon Mine Closure Amid Energy Transition
Colombia is pressing Glencore to engage in discussions about the closure of the Cerrejon coal mine, one of the world's largest open-pit coal export operations. The mine, located in La Guajira, Colombia, is operated under a concession agreement set to expire in 2034. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has emphasized the need for an energy transition, prohibiting new exploration contracts for hydrocarbons and minerals, including coal. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Edwin Palma, has invited Glencore to participate in a dialogue with a tripartite committee to discuss the mine's closure and the future economic and social strategies for the region. This initiative is part of Colombia's broader push towards renewable energy and involves investments in clean energy and workforce retraining.
