UK Considers Stricter AI Oversight Amidst EU's AI Act Implementation
The United Kingdom is exploring the implementation of more stringent legal requirements for meaningful human oversight in artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This consideration is particularly focused on high-risk applications, such as algorithmic management, which have been identified as leading to potentially incorrect and unchallengeable AI evaluations. Currently, the UK operates under a principles-based, sector-led regulatory approach for AI, lacking specific AI legislation. This contrasts with the European Union, which adopted the AI Act in 2024. The EU's legislation mandates human oversight for high-risk AI applications, including algorithmic management, with this requirement set to become effective from December 2, 2027. The push for enhanced oversight in the UK aims to address concerns raised by workers, particularly in call centers, regarding opaque AI scoring systems and their impact on performance evaluations and compensation.
