Fairbanks Daily News-Miner Transitions to New Nonprofit Structure and Governance
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner has announced a change in its nonprofit structure and governance, transferring its assets, including a building and a luxury penthouse, to Fairbanks Public Media Inc. The newspaper, which has been a nonprofit since 2016, will now operate as an autonomous public nonprofit under Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3) status, allowing it to be supported by public funds and overseen by a volunteer board of directors. This change means donations to the Daily News-Miner are now fully tax-deductible. The announcement, made online, has raised questions regarding the specifics of this new structure, including the appointment and removal process for board members, the board's ethics policy, and the definition of 'public media' in this context, differentiating it from entities like Alaska Public Media and KUAC. The newspaper's history dates back to 1903, and it was previously owned by the Helen E. Snedden Foundation since 2015.
