ONS Appoints Banking Executive as New Digital Chief to Enhance Tech Capabilities
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has appointed Luke Ashton as its new director general for digital, data, and technology. Ashton, who previously served as the group chief data officer and process automation lead at Barclays, is expected to bring significant expertise to the ONS. His appointment is part of a broader effort to address 'deep-seated' issues identified in a recent review of the department, which called for a restructuring of its leadership. ONS permanent secretary Darren Tierney expressed confidence in Ashton's ability to provide the strategic direction needed to modernize the organization's digital and technical capabilities. Ashton has a background in engineering and consulting, having worked with Deloitte on major technology infrastructure projects for financial services firms.
