ArXiv Implements Ban on Authors for AI-Generated Content Violations
ArXiv, a prominent open repository for preprint research, has announced a new policy to address the misuse of large language models (LLMs) in scientific papers. The repository, which is widely used in fields such as computer science and mathematics, will impose a one-year ban on authors if their submissions contain evidence of unverified AI-generated content. This decision follows concerns about the rise of fabricated citations in research, attributed to the careless use of LLMs. Thomas Dietterich, chair of ArXiv's computer science section, emphasized that authors must take full responsibility for their content, regardless of how it is generated. The policy is not a blanket ban on LLMs but requires authors to ensure the accuracy and integrity of their submissions. Authors found in violation will face a ban and must have future submissions accepted by a reputable peer-reviewed venue before posting on ArXiv.
