FEMA Prepares for 2026 Hurricane Season Amid Staffing and Funding Challenges
As the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins, FEMA is under scrutiny regarding its readiness to respond effectively to potential storms. The National Hurricane Center predicts 8 to 14 named storms this season, with 1 to 3 potentially becoming hurricanes. Louisiana, a hurricane-prone state, has already prepositioned emergency supplies, including over 390,000 meals, 693,000 water containers, and 702,400 sandbags. FEMA has faced significant challenges, including staffing cuts and funding disputes, but recent leadership changes and rehiring efforts aim to address these issues. FEMA has also conducted drills simulating a Category 2 hurricane making landfall in Creole, Louisiana, and plans to meet in person with emergency management directors from hurricane-prone states starting June 8 to discuss preparedness strategies.
