Judge Blocks Alabama Redistricting, Affecting Vote
A United States District Judge has denied Alabama's request to redistrict its legislative map ahead of an upcoming election. This decision follows an emergency request filed by Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, who sought to alter the districting map after controversial court rulings. The current legislative map will remain in place, but Allen plans to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. The denial comes after a special legislative session in Montgomery, where bills were passed to create a special primary election. This session was prompted by a Supreme Court ruling that altered part of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in the case of Louisiana v. Callais. The special election will only proceed if the court lifts the injunction that mandates the use of the existing districting maps until 2030.
