Canada Maintains Sanctions on Zimbabwe Despite Diplomatic Shifts
Canada continues to uphold sanctions against Zimbabwe, originally imposed in 2008 following a political crisis. These sanctions target numerous Zimbabwean individuals and entities, including political and military figures. Despite significant political and economic changes in Zimbabwe, Canada has not altered its stance, unlike the United States and the European Union, which have revised their sanctions policies. The U.S. has shifted to targeted Global Magnitsky sanctions, while the EU has largely dismantled its sanctions, maintaining only limited restrictions. This divergence raises questions about the coherence of Western sanctions policies towards Zimbabwe, especially as Canadian-linked mining interests, such as Caledonia Mining Corporation, expand operations in the country.
