Veterans Affairs Utilizes AI and Overtime to Expedite Disability Claims Processing
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is employing artificial intelligence (AI) and mandatory overtime to address a longstanding backlog in disability claims processing. The VA has significantly reduced the average response time for claims from five months to under three months, with a goal of achieving a 30 to 40-day turnaround for each claim. This improvement is attributed to the implementation of AI systems that assist claims processors in managing the extensive documentation submitted by veterans. Despite these advancements, concerns remain about the accuracy of AI in processing claims, as some veterans have reported errors in their claims due to overlooked evidence. The VA has invested heavily in automation technology, including a $485 million contract with IBM for the Automated Decision Support system, which helps streamline the claims process. However, the system has faced criticism for initial inaccuracies, prompting the VA to make enhancements to ensure better outcomes.
