3 Million New Jersey Residents Facing Drought Amid Record Dry Conditions
The National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) reports that 3 million residents in New Jersey are currently experiencing drought conditions. This is part of the Mid-Atlantic Drought Early Warning System (DEWS), which aims to improve drought resilience across the region, including Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, New Jersey experienced its driest June on record since 1895, with only 2.48 inches (62.99 mm) of total precipitation, a decrease of 1.25 inches (31.75 mm) from normal. Additionally, the state recorded its driest January–June period since 1895, with 15.14 inches (384.56 mm) of total precipitation, a significant deficit of 6.50 inches (165.10 mm) from normal.
