Wyoming Rescuers Attempt to Capture Elusive Stray Dog at Rest Area
For three weeks, a stray dog named Diya, meaning 'wild heart,' has eluded capture at the Split Rock Rest Area near Jeffrey City, Wyoming. Mark Lewis, board president of Furever Found in Fremont, a local animal shelter, has been leading the daily efforts to rescue her. Diya, described as smart and wary, recognizes Lewis's truck and will eat from his hand but remains cautious of leashes and traps. The community has rallied around Diya, with over 100 individuals visiting the rest area to provide food and water, sometimes inadvertently hindering rescue attempts by making her less reliant on the baited trap. Lewis and other volunteers are now sleeping at the rest stop over the weekend to monitor a live trap, which has been kept open for Diya to become accustomed to, and will be armed for capture. Diya's backstory reveals she slipped out of a collar at the rest area while being transported by a family who had acquired her from a breeder, where she had spent her life in a kennel.
